  The 1960s

In the early sixties, the Bank adopted a detailed process of planning of its activities. Base don an annual budget for investment, participation of several bodies was determined in the formulation of guidelines of an administrative nature. In this phase, training of human resources was implemented, in order to consolidate administrative and operational processes.

1961/industrialization

On 03/08/61, Banco do Nordeste signed its first foreign loan agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in the amount of US$ 10 million. These funds enabled the financing of several activities in the industrial sector, which allowed, amongst other things, implementation of programs geared towards the re-equipment and modernization of the region’s textile industry.

In this same period, Banco do Nordeste and the Federal University of Ceará devised a project for creation of a Training Center in Regional Economic Development (CETREDE), for the purpose of qualifying local labor in order to meet the demand of emerging industrialization.

1962/FINOR

From this year onwards, Banco do Nordeste came to receive deposits from the 34/18 System, which inaugurated the system of fiscal incentives in the Region. This federal government tool was substituted, in 1974, by the Fund for Investment in the Northeast (FINOR).

1963/infrastructure

The Bank began execution of its far-reaching program for financing basic services (drinking water and sanitation) in the Northeastern capital cities, based on a contract signed with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Other segments of urban infrastructure, such as power, telecommunications and transport received special attention from the Bank, notably in the second half of the sixties.

1967/support

Implementation of the Aid Program for Small and Medium-scale Industry, with the participation of Banco do Nordeste, SUDENE and the governments of states in the Northeast.

1969/prospects

Once the ambitious project “Prospects for Development of the Northeast up to 1980” was begun by Banco do Nordeste, the objective was to analyze the possibilities for development in the Region in the period between 1970 and 1980.
